Re: Issues-Behaviour of Management

Dear Sir/Madam

Correspondence dated 23rd March 2021 issued by registered post on the same date to Mr Liam McAdam, Store Manager, Dunnes Roscommon refers. (I have included said correspondence for your ease of reference). Matters of serious concern to our members were raised in the aforementioned correspondence and to date no reply has been forthcoming.

There is a strong feeling of discontent and anger being expressed by a large percentage of staff at the Roscommon store location regarding the unacceptable behaviour of management towards them. It is imperative that Dunnes immediately fulfil their duty of care towards staff without any further prevarication or unnecessary delay.

I trust you will afford this matter your urgent attention as this workplace situation cannot be allowed to continue. Should a satisfactory response not be received within seven working days of the date of this letter we will take further instruction from our members in order to protect their right, to a safe and healthy workplace environment.

Members have requested that the concerns raised in the survey be made known to the Store manager, Liam McAdam, by way of a letter from your local Union official requesting that he address these issues as a matter of urgency. See copy of letter below.

I remain available to meet with the company at short notice to resolve this outstanding matter.

Yours Sincerely
For Mandate Trade Union

Dear McAdam,

I have been contacted by a number of individuals in your store over the past number of weeks expressing concern regarding the behaviour of management towards staff. To ascertain the full extent of these issues Mandate conducted a survey open to all staff. Over 84% of staff surveyed believe that Management is not treating every member of staff with the dignity and respect that they deserve at all times.

As evidence of the depth of feeling regarding these issues, etc., please see the following survey comments:

  • “Spoken to in a very angry way in front of other members of staff and customers on numerous occasions”
  • “Management rude to staff and I’m aware that he uses bad language to staff”
  • “Some staff have left because of the way they were treated and talked to by the manager”
  • “I have been made aware by some staff that they have been treated unfairly by a particular manager”.
  • “Bullying from management and swearing at certain members of staff”
  • “I feel this is unfair as it is making their job more difficult”
  • “Store manager is very intimidating and aggressive”.
  • “Store manager is rude to staff members. Using bad language and not letting staff speak or have their say”.
  • “If you approach him over anything he’s likely to yell at you or berate you”.
  • “I’ve heard of him swearing at staff and upsetting them to tears and just laughing at it”
  • “Been reprimanded in a conversation full of curse words and been spoken to with little respect”

Some of your staff who only recently joined Mandate for reasons of the above, are of the view that a letter from the Union to yourself will suffice. However, some of our more long-term members and the undersigned, acknowledge, it may require more than a single letter and further action may be necessary. In light of this, should you wish to meet with Mandate representatives to discuss how we can address these issues, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned.

I trust you will look into these issues as a matter of urgency and agree that this situation cannot continue.

Yours Sincerely,
For Mandate Trade Union
