Re: Liffey Valley Car Park Charges Protest Oct 23rd 12pm(noon)

Date: Wednesday 19th October 2022

Dear Member,

Workers in the Liffey Valley Centre are being hit with car park charges of €2.50 per day. They are being restricted by which area of the car park they are able to access. The car park charges can amount to more than €600 a year for workers, who are already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. The majority of these workers are fellow Mandate Trade Union members.

These charges are being imposed on retail workers in Liffey Valley who kept the centre open during the Covid pandemic. There is no valid reason to impose these charges on workers, it is a tax on work. No engagement took place with the workers prior to the announcement and the Liffey Valley Centre Director has refused to meet with the workers Union Officials.

A petition is being launched to gain the support of the general public. Members are being asked to sign the petition and encourage others to sign also. The petition will be both physical and online and when completed will be delivered to the Centre Director Mr Denis O’Connell.

The workers have held a number of protests at the centre already and will do so again this Sunday, October 23rd from 12pm. We are encouraging all Mandate members who work in Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, adjoining retail outlets or live in the Dublin area who are not rostered to work to come along with family and friends to support the workers’ protest this Sunday. Members should meet at the Liffey Valley sign beside the green car park at noon.

Yours fraternally,

Jim Fuery
Divisional Organiser
