Re; Health and Safety Concerns /Dunnes Parkway, Limerick.
Dear Mr. Campbell,
We received a number of complaints to our office in relation to Health Safety and Welfare at Work of our members in Dunnes Stores Parkway and subsequently conducted a survey of the members to prioritise the issues.
Given the current climate with new strains of Covid 19 prevalent within the community, now more than ever retail workers are to the forefront in the at risk category. With that in mind the following urgent Health and Safety issues need to be addresses without delay to ensure our members have a safe working environment.
- Reduce customer admittance quotas to levels allowed at the beginning of the Pandemic. The current numbers allowed in store are not allowing for safe social distancing. Floor staff no longer feel safe working in aisles because of the long queues for checkouts. If customer numbers are not controlled staff may need to leave overcrowded aisles to work in safer areas.
- Inform customers on entering the store that mask wearing is mandatory in store, unless due to medical reasons, as cited in S.I.296 Health Act 2020. Currently too many customers are entering the store without masks and they are not being asked to comply.
- Encourage and permit all staff the opportunity to wash their hands at regular scheduled intervals as was implemented during the first lockdown 2020 and without any fear of disciplinary sanction for doing so even at busy periods.
- Reinstate the regular cleaning of baskets, trollies, door handles and checkouts as implemented in first lockdown 2020.
I trust that all of the above Health and Safety issues will be addressed immediately. If the issues remain unresolved I will have no alternative but to consult with our members as to the next course of action.
Yours sincerely,
For Mandate Trade Union,
Karen Wall,
Divisional Organiser.
